The idea of waking up in the morning, grabbing a cup of fresh coffee and firing up the laptop while still wearing pajamas sounds like a dream!  However, the reality is quite different.

 

You Are Your Own Boss

 

Being your own boss means that you are your own boss!  In other words, you are the only one who has the power to keep yourself on track throughout the day.  Not only do you set your own deadlines and work hours, but you are the only one responsible for completing projects on time and staying organized.  Therefore, it is essential to approach your home office working environment with a high degree of professionalism and organization.

 

Dress the Part

 

Dressing like you just got out of bed tends to make you feel like you just got out of bed, and any feeling that has even a dim relationship to your bed is not good for a productive and efficient working experience.  It’s not necessary to dress up in a suit and tie, but taking care of your body and dressing well definitely helps place you an entrepreneur in a positive work mindset.

 

Morning Routine

 

Stumbling out of bed and being at the office in a few minutes is another bad idea.  Make sure to create some semblance of a morning routine in which there is a definite space of time between when you wake up and when you sit down to begin working.  Make sure this time is managed in a manner that promotes wakefulness, positive mindset, etc.  Taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood or making a quick trip to the gym are two great ways to get the day started right.

 

Set the Hours

 

It’s easy to work non-stop as an online entrepreneur who works from home.  Since your office is always just a few feet away, it can be tempting to work 12+ hours per day every day.  At times, these types of work hours may be essential, such as at the beginning when you are setting up your online merchant account and other developmental tasks, but do not ever let it become the norm.  It’s important to create a strong work/life balance.  It will keep you energized and refreshed on a consistent basis, which will result in stronger work performance and better efficiency over a longer time horizon.

 

The Home Office

At first, it may be necessary to work from the kitchen able, but transform a small section of your home or apartment to act as your office as quickly as possible.  This will help create a natural boundary and separation between what is home and what is the office.  Then, at the end of the day when you “leave the office,” you really can leave a specific space behind until the next day.  As an at-home entrepreneur, diligence and discipline are essential.  By taking intentional steps toward creating a positive work environment, one will be ahead of the pack and ready to create a successful business.

Tiny Steps Are Needed

The most common question I hear is “where do I begin” to make money online with a home based business?  There is no easy, one-line answer.  There are many steps that need to be taken.  The first step is making the decision and finding out if having an online home based business is for you.  So answer the following questions:

  1. What is your passion? What skill sets can you contribute towards a home based business?
  2. Why do you want to make money online or have a home based business?  Need extra income, lost your job, want to change careers or like the idea of being a stay at home spouse?
  3. When will you start your home based business? Do you have some funds set aside for start up costs, are there classes you need to complete or are you ready to jump in right now?
  4. Where will your home based business be operated from?  Do you have to lease or rent office space, find a spare room in your home or remodel a garage or basement for a home office?

The answers to these questions are important.  It is especially important that you answer them honestly and really think about each one carefully.  Why?  Setting up and starting an online business and working from home must be taken seriously. 

Even though you may have the opportunity to work from home and make money online, this is still a business and you must maintain the proper mindset when getting started.  This will ensure success down the road.

One Step Forward Two Steps Back

I can’t tell you how many times I felt like I was in a losing battle.  Working long hours, evenings and even weekends I felt some days it still wasn’t enough.  But then you have the days where you know you have taken giant leaps!  Those are still the ‘tiny steps’ towards success.

Each step, no matter how big or small, are learning experiences that build your confidence and knowledge.  It is similar to obtaining your Bachelor’s Degree in college.  That doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t get awarded to you without lots of hard work. 

So it is important to not only work hard but to endure those ups and downs to achieve your ultimate goals for success.  There will be many positive and motivational moments that will maintain a winning mindset.  Never give up!

Thinking Online Business sm 180x300 Can You Have an Online Business and Full Time Career?Our current economy and high unemployment rate is causing thousands of people to reconsider their current career paths.  Some consider this to be the most unstable time they have ever experienced.  Working for large companies and corporations, many are finding an uncertainty they thought would happen to others and not them.

Online small businesses have been seemingly popping up everywhere.  Why?

  • Freedom to be your own boss, make your own hours
  • Unlimited income potential, tax advantages
  • Ability to work from home, be with family
  • Work within your skills, expertise or passion
  • And much more….

Contemplating changing your career or employment goals, whether you have a job and looking for side income, working full-time but want to change your career path, currently un-employed or want to be a stay at home spouse – then starting or growing an online business may be the perfect fit for you. 

If you are thinking about taking the plunge into starting an online business, then you must consider the following:

  • Have the Desire, Devotion and Determination
  • Will commit to working hard – long hours or working in the evenings
  • Taking time to learn online internet skills and techniques
  • Have the proper equipment; computer, printer and internet access
  • Ability to never give up

These are just some of the things I point out because so many people think that it is easy to just get online, get a website and wait for the money to roll in.  Just like any other business, you have to work at it with a full commitment.  Otherwise, you might as well keep your day job!

For those with full time jobs, it will be a balancing act to investing time and working at your new online business.  Your efforts will bring rewards and eventually allow you to quit your job and make your online business a full time passion.  But it will take a person with a strong vision and conviction to persevere.

I personally had to make a decision last year.  June 2010 was my final D-Day …. Decision Day!  After many years working for large corporations and as an independent contractor, I could see my online business growing and bringing the success I needed,  It was time to make the decision.  It is my passion, I love what I do and along with all the time I spent over the years to understand how to have online business success, it was a very comfortable decision.  This will happen for you too. 

So if you can really be honest with yourself, evaluate your current skills and how you would handle achieving your goals, you have the right mindset to prevail. 

If you are jumping in because you see others or ‘it seems’ easy to have a successful online business, then I would not suggest you consider doing this. 

It takes a true commitment and if you know you truly are that type of person, then by all means, take the steps now to start your online business.  Every hour, every minute that you can invest in you and your business, will put you that much closer to a goal of freedom and financial success.
