5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses

I would like to thank Emma Tomlinson for contributing the following article packed with amazing information on SEO. I am confident everyone will take away and utilize these great tips to enhance their business success.

_

Optimisation plays a major role in a website‘s success or failure. Web owners cannot hope to become a credible presence in the Internet if they are not implementing certain SEO strategies.

_

Business websites, in particular, have an immediate need for local search engine optimisation. It targets specific audiences and it boosts your visibility in results pages.

_

Most importantly, your physical address is prominently displayed to millions of viewers, but specifically to the thousands of users within your geographical region.

_

When I first learned about this, I must admit that I had some difficulty in understanding what it is or what it entails. This is why I want to share with all of you the techniques that I have learned.

_

THE BASICS OF LOCAL SEO

_

*Look for ideal keywords for your businessblog infographic1 5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses

_

Keywords are the main backbone that boosts your website to the top of SERPs. But using just any word related to your niche is not enough. You have to conduct a thorough research and analysis to determine which terms are ideal and which ones you should save for later.

_

Ideally, you should focus on long-tail keywords. You have lesser competition with them because they are more specific and therefore more unique. For example, instead of using “online shopping”, you can use “online shopping for cars” or “online shopping for cars in Australia”. These are longer, more specific, and have localised keywords. You can even include cities, regions, or towns for better targeting of queries.

Now if you are having difficulty looking for search terms, there are a plethora of free online services you can use. The best examples are those from Google like AdWords, AdSense, and Insights for Search. Any of these will supply you with accurate information about the “popularity” of a term in a particular region, thus giving you an idea about the competition that you are up for.

_

_

  *Allow clients to give reviews

_

Do not hesitate to give your viewers survey sheets or feedback polls for fear of a bad rating. Remember that search engines are now factoring online reviews for your ranking in SERPs. They are basically analysing how often your business website is talked about.

_

But aside from conducting your own, you must also allow your customers to review you on sites like Yelp.com, Angie’s List, or Qype.

_blog infographic4 300x191 5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses

Plus, it is one of the most effective ways of interacting with your audience. Get their feedbacks, ask them how they rate your products, and encourage them to give their suggestions for further improvement.

_

You can even use the data you gather as a topic for new content. See? That’s hitting three birds with just one stone.

_

_

*Be listed in Google Places and other local directories

blog infographic5 5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses_

Often associated with Google Maps, this is a location-based results page that shows you an accurate map of the region or city you are looking for. Now why is it important to appear in such pages?

_

First of all, this is a directory that offers its users directions or guidelines on how to find a business establishment from a specific place. When you have a credible presence here, it will increase your visibility over the Web and boost your chances of earning a top spot in local SERPs.

_

Now for your enterprise to be listed, you just have to follow these steps:

  1. Access your Google Account, preferably what you are using for your business and what you are using for Analytics and Webmaster Tools.blog infographic6 300x140 5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses

  2. Go to http://www.google.com/places and click on the button ‘Add New Business.’ Afterwards, you will be redirected to a new page which could feature your contact information from Google Maps. You can edit this if the info is inaccurate.

  3. Fill out the detailed information of your company such as address, phone number, category, description of business, email address, domain, office hours, and other necessary details. Then, click ‘Submit.’blog infographic7 300x177 5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses

  4. Verify your identity via PIN. You can either do that over the phone or through email, although the former is quicker and easier.

_

After that, you will find your enterprise on Google Places. You can add more information like discount rates, photos, sales offers, and more. This is definitely one great FREE service that will help your local SEO efforts.

_

_

*Aim for quality links from localised sources

Authority websites that link to yours can undoubtedly enhance your position in SERPs.  But to maximise the contribution of link-building, you must also focus on linking with sites related to your location. For example, if you are selling cars in Queensland, you can link with mechanics or repairs shops in Queensland as well.

_

This also contributes to the relevancy of your content since the long-tail keywords you are using are already localised or specific.

blog infographic8 281x300 5 Simple Local SEO Strategies for Small Businesses_

Another way you can build links is to post as guest author on locally targeted blogs. This will generate quality backlinks to yours, plus it will increase your visibility over the Web.

_

_

*Optimise your content

_

Although a lot of SEO experts say that content is no longer king, it is still immensely important for your website, especially since search engines are always prioritising high-quality posts.

_

Of course, aside from ensuring that your articles are original, compelling, and relevant to your niche, you should also use keywords that are location-based to target local queries.

CONCLUSION

These may seem irrelevant now, but you will soon see that even the most basic strategies can contribute a substantial increase to your ranking in results pages.

10 Steps To Writing Great Blog Posts

Writing Articles for Article Marketing thumb 300x202 10 Steps To Writing Great Blog Posts
How do you go from writing OK posts, to writing GREAT blog posts?

Writing great content is vitally important for your blog!  It is this content that helps to attract visitors to your site, visitors that can earn you money by clicking on your displayed adverts, affiliate links, product promotions, etc.

It’s easy for your visitors to go elsewhere for better content if you are not delivering what they want.

So, I thought I’d write this 10 step guide to help you write great blog posts.  I hope you find this useful.
–

1. Post Title

Approximately 80% of all people will read your blog post title! That is a huge percentage of people, however only 20% end up actually clicking on and reading the post. That is a big difference!

I hope this helps to show just how important the post title is. Spending time writing a great title can increase the amount of people that go on to read your article.

Thankfully, certain types of title work better than others.  Here are some that I’m sure you will have come across;

  • How To… Titles – People are always looking to learn something new, so there is high demand for articles that show them ‘how to…‘ do something, e.g. ‘How To Set Up A Blog!’ or ‘How To Change A Light Bulb!’. Tutorial posts use this type of headline often.
  • Top Lists – This has to be one of my favourites.  People love top lists, whether it’s ‘Top 10 NFL Stadiums’, ’5 Ways To Make Money Online’, ‘70 Tips On How To Be A Better Blogger!‘, etc. People find these lists easy to follow because they are split up into a set number of points.  This very post would fall into this category, so it worked with you!
  • Question Titles – A ‘question’ title asks your readers a question, which you then try to answer within your post. For example, ‘Is Nuclear Energy Worth The Risk?‘, ‘What’s The Best Way To Improve Website Traffic?‘, etc. These questions need to involve the audience, so either they want to read how you have answered it, or they want to see if they agree with what you have written.

2. Introduction

You need to grab your reader’s attention straight away with a good blog post introduction!

Your introduction can literally be the difference between your article being read or not! You can usually judge how good an article is going to be based on it’s introduction. If it’s dull or written badly, then the article probably won’t get any better. An intro like that will only loose readers.

Again, certain types work better than others.  Here are some of ideas to get you started;

  • Start With A Fact – The whole point of the internet is to share information, that’s why people love facts!  Adding a fact at the beginning of your post will instantly grab peoples attention.  e.g. ‘93% of people lost weight on this diet!’
  • Start With A Statement – A bold statement is another great way to grab your readers attention. e.g. ‘Stop Wasting Time & Start Doing!‘ or ‘Wake Up & Start Living!’.  Readers will want to learn how they can ‘Stop Wasting Time’, so they will read your post.
  • Start With A Question – This works in exactly the same principle as a ‘question title’.  It engages the reader and makes them curious to find out how you have answered in in your post.  Though, obviously don’t use both a Question title & Question Intro!

3. Thumbnail Picture

A lot of bloggers forget about image thumbnails! This is a small picture that appears next to your post title and summary, on your homepage. This helps to draw the attention of your website visitors, making them more likely to click on and read your post.

Your blog post thumbnail does not always need to relate to your post, it just needs to stand out on your homepage and draw the attention of your readers.

4. Writing Style & Technique

I could write quite a bit for this section, but I will try to keep it short.  Your writing style gives your readers a Business Computer 218x300 10 Steps To Writing Great Blog Postsglimpse of what you are like as a person, that’s why you need to spend time developing your own style of writing.

Write about what you know, what you are interested in, your own personal experiences, your own opinions, etc. Not only does this make it easier to write, but it helps readers to understand your viewpoint and gain trust.

People have short attention spans! You should try to keep sentences and paragraphs short and to the point, which helps to keep your readers interested.

Edit your posts!!!  Make sure that you read through what you’ve written before publishing. You’ll be able to see which parts you can improve by re-writing, correcting spelling & grammar, shortening, deleting, etc.  Knowing where to edit your work, makes you go from being a good writer to being an excellent writer!

5. Images

Using images within your blog posts is a great way to make them look more interesting to your visitors. The majority of your readers will never read an entire blog post, instead they scan through a post looking for bits of information that they find useful. Breaking up your post with images, helps to illustrate the point that you are making, whilst maintaining the attention of the reader.

You can find loads of copyright free images online to use within your posts on sites like Flickr & Google Images.

6. Article Length

Most people advise that shorter posts (300-750 words) are much better than longer articles because people find them easier to read. Articles that are 2000+ words are read less often than shorter ones, however this does depend on what you are writing about.

This post is a little on the long side at 1,436 words, but I believe that there is enough quality information here to justify it.  If I had crammed it all into a short post of about 500 words, the quality would have suffered.

A good rule to remember is not to make articles longer than they have to be. Editing your articles after writing your initial draft to cut down on excess.

7. SEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a vitally important part of blogging!  When writing your blog posts, it’s SEO 300x225 10 Steps To Writing Great Blog Postsimportant to make them search engine friendly. You can do this by including certain keywords within your posts, which the search engines use to identify what your article is about.  The higher your pages rank on Google/Bing/Yahoo/etc. results pages (SERPs), the more traffic your site will get!

Include keywords in your post title, meta descriptions, url structure, heading tags (H1, H2, H3,etc.) and make sure that any links that you include work.  I use the ‘Google Keyword Tool‘ to research all of my keywords. You can find this great tool within your own Google AdWords account, under the ‘Reporting & Tools’ tab.

8. Internal Linking

Linking to your other blog posts is a great way of improving your site.  Not only does it make it easier for your website visitors to navigate around your site and read all of your great content, but it also allows your site to be properly crawled by search engines and improve your SEO.

9. Encourage Comments

You want people to comment at the bottom of your posts as this helps to create a community around your website.  People will be able to see the reaction that your post has on other people (preferably a good reaction!), so they will be more likely to trust what you are saying.

To encourage people to comment, you should end your post with a question.  People can then respond if they want to.  It can be as simple as “Did you find this post useful?”, it just needs to promote a bit of discussion.

10. Easy To Share

This technically isn’t anything to do with writing, but I thought it was important to add here.  Getting traffic is one of the most important aspects of blogging, after all you want people to read what you have written.

You can make this easier for people by adding social media sharing buttons at the top or bottom of your posts.  This way, when someone reads your post and likes it, they can share it with their friends/colleagues via Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.

A Closer Look at Search Engine Optimization

Thank you to my Guest Author: Yusuf Chowdhury – Online Business Owners

SEO Gold 300x170 A Closer Look at Search Engine OptimizationDoing business online has made me observe a lot of things in different fields. One of the most noticeable changes that I have encountered was that the trends in Search Engine Optimization, more commonly known as SEO, continue to evolve along with the algorithmic tweaks done by the major search engines.

In trying to keep up with all these changes, businesses around the world have indeed started to look at SEO in a whole new perspective.

While it’s a fact that online shopping is slowly becoming the norm among consumers, we can’t deny that actual customers walking into your business establishment still translates to an added profit margin.

To target both types of consumers, I have noticed that business owners are now considering SEO more than ever. Well, having your name on Google’s first page can actually give your brand a level of credibility so SEO is definitely worth the shot. This could translate to higher conversion rate in terms of online sales, especially for busy shoppers who don’t have all the time in the world to click on every single listing staring back at them. But how do you really get on that spot – the spot where your business could virtually reign over your chosen field or industry?

How can you really make the most out of the SEO vogue that has long been dominating the online market?

For starters, you should understand that SEO is more than just hundreds of back links. Back linking as a form of Off-Page SEO cannot guarantee you a sure spot on the main directory of Search Engines. You certainly can’t and shouldn’t expect your site to rank on Bing, Yahoo, or Google just because your name is posted on every directory listing on the World Wide Web.

Off-page SEO should be done in conjunction with On-page Optimization. This technique requires more than just writing or linking proficiency. A bit of programming skills and some optimizing programs are requisites for basic On-Page Optimization.

Here are a few basics to get your on-page SEO rolling:

  • The most important thing for on-site optimization is the title tag. Use keywords or incorporate key phrases in your title tag. Use between 4 to 8 keywords but be sure that they will not exceed 70 characters
  • While the meta description does not contribute a lot to your ranking status, it should still have substance and impact. They may not be that important to those Google robots, but you’ll certainly need them to get the attention of your human readers. Every page should have its own meta description, but be sure to limit the characters to 170.
  • The Header tag acts like the main title of your page. The main header is labeled as H1, and sub-titles or subcategories could use an H2 heading and so on.
  • It would help to add keyword-rich descriptive texts on the images or photos posted on your website.
  • To further optimize posts like blogs, you may add up to 10 keyword based tags.
  • Mind your site’s keyword density. A density of 1 to 3 percent is the general average. Anything more than this could be considered as spamming, and could cause your site to be totally dropped by search engines.

If you are equipped with the basic know-how, then these on-page SEO fundamentals can be as simple as one, two, optimized!

Link Building Best Practices for Better SEO

What is Link building for SEO?

Link building is one of the techniques used in search engine optimization where search engine optimizers acquire inbound / back links to a website from relevant websites to improve search engine rankings. Every link pointing to the website is counted as a vote and the many quality back links your website have the better. This will also help to boost the site page rank.

For example a real estate website can have inbound links from other realtor websites and also from industry sites like CMHC, homebuilders association etc. They are all related to the same industry and this helps Google and other search engines to rankLink Building for Best SEO Practices1 300x279 Link Building Best Practices for Better SEO the website high on search engines for any real estate keywords.

This process needs to be executed tactically without getting any reduction in search engine ranking positions (SERPs). Because of some link building practices one can get paid back links to the website to boost SERPs.  Basically some pay for website owners to purchase links. You may have heard link farms or link schemes, they are similar. Google always advised against buying links and if you suspect any website involved in the link forms you can report them to Google.

Black hat Link building – New York Times exposes J.C. Penny!

What New York times exposed about J.C. penny was that J.C. Penny has been participating in link schemes to gain high search engine rankings for certain keywords like “dresses”, “bedding”, “furniture” etc..They have been ranking for these terms like #1 on Google apparently for the entire holiday season. After the NYtimes exposed whole link scheme Google took manual penalty action on J.C. Penny website. Many of their keyword rankings are dropped from #1 placement to #68 – #70. Any search engine rankings beyond page 3 on Google virtually gets no traffic!

Link building best practices for SEO:

There isn’t any definite guide on link building best practices, the below are most commonly used best practices to build inbound links.

  • Create something that has value for your community or industry; this will naturally create back links for your website.
  • Create listings from local web directories; look for the free directories that only accept quality submissions.
  • Participate in Q&A websites, offer your expertise to the community
  • Look at your competitors, check their back links. If you have a common supplier or manufacturer you can get a link
  • Write articles – submit them to many sites that publish your content for free
  • Do press releases – you can write a press release about a new product or service you are offering
  • You can also use affiliates – many of the affiliates have their own websites and request a back link from a featured page
  • Create badges that will create back links to your website. Offer these badges for free
  • Offer free tools, free information sessions or webinars and request for a free blog. Ask for people to share the link on social networking sites.
  • Participate in forums – be a real person and offer something valuable for the forum, do not spam to get a link. You might get kicked out of the forum.
  • Sponsor community events – generate press coverage and get a link back from all new paper websites
  • Post job openings to industry authority websites and many free job posting sites

Blog Planning – Top 3 Keys to Success

Blog Plan Image 270x270 150x150 Blog Planning – Top 3 Keys to Success

Image: BigStockPhoto.com

First things first, right?  Blog planning is critical for your online business success.  Once you have established your market niche, it is time to get things rolling.  Your blog or site will be the most important part in bringing awareness about you, your products or services.

Check out these 3 Key Blog Planning Tips:

Content – With out a doubt, if your site does not provide good information that brings value to your visitors, don’t be surprised when no one visits your site.  The content you provide should reflect your market niche.  Provide value, ideas, suggestions, expert advice, and information that will help your visitors solve a problem or cause them to interact with you to learn more.

You don’t have to be a professional writer, news reporter or English teacher!  In fact, most people enjoy when your posts reflect your personality.  They can relate to you as a real person behind the blog instead of a site that is just updated by automated software.

Consider posting to your blog on a regular basis.  If it 2 times a week, stay consistent and try to never leave your blog dormant for too long.  Your posts should be interesting, bring curiosity or reaction.  Ask your visitor for their comments, feedback and get them to interact with you.

Of course utilizing and including your key words is important, but if you just want to get going and don’t understand all the SEO you keep hearing about, then just start writing and posting – plan on learning how your blog can be optimized to increase your ranking with search engines as soon as you can, but don’t let that stop you or be an excuse not to get your blog up and going.

Promoting – Let’s say you just opened up a little shop in your hometown.  You had to lease a storefront that is around the corner and down the alley.  How is anyone going to find you when they are driving or walking by the alley?  Consider your blog ‘around the corner down then alley’ — you have to let others know you are there.

Social media sites are one of the best and probably the quickest way to promote your site.  Plan on setting up profile pages with social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin.  Promote your site by sharing your blog posts with groups, friends, fans and other connections.  End each post with a question that will encourage others to interact.

Other ways to promote your blog could be through videos, articles or commenting on other blogs or forums.  Refrain from too much advertising of ‘selling your products’, instead offer free information, newsletters, tips and techniques that you want to share with your visitors.  This helps to build a strong relationship and connection that should always be your first consideration in starting an online business in the first place.

Design – The look and feel of your site is important.  Keeping it simple, easy to read and navigate should all be part of your design plan.  I have seen blog sites with black backgrounds and it makes it very hard to read.  If your design is attractive, fun or interesting, it could be another reason why your visitor will keep coming back to your site or even subscribe or sign up for your updates.

If this is your first blog or you are just starting out, fight the impulse in hiring high cost web techs.  There are a lot of free blog designs or low cost designs that you can use.  Unless of course you are absolutely not computer literate and don’t know anyone that can help you, then by all means, hire a web expert.

Your design should include your logo, personal photo and other images that reflect your market niche.  Nothing is more frustrating than going to a blog for dog training and the header is all about advertisements or banner ads.

How is your blog or site attracting visitors?  Do you have a plan and are you implementing those plans?  Offer your suggestions, ideas and ways that you utilize your blog for you online business success.

Your Website Storefront Basic Must Haves

Shopping Online 150x150 Your Website Storefront Basic Must Haves Your website is the storefront to your business, products or service.  It is really important to have all the necessary components available for your visitors.

When you make it easy for your customer to learn, understand and know what your website is about, that is when you will turn a visitor into a paying customer.  And that should be a goal we all want to attain each and every day!

Review the following basic ‘must have’ features and compare them to your website:

  • Shopping Cart – Top of your list should be a working ecommerce feature that provides your customer a way to easily purchase your products or service with their credit cards.  Research the best Merchant accounts PayPal or other online shopping carts that will best fit your business.
  •  Product Information – Plenty of content and product descriptions including sizes, dimensions, colors and comparisons with other similar products is a must.  Your website should also allow the customer to choose a product, provide clear pricing and shipping costs making the transaction as easy as possible for your customer.
  •  Customer Service – Your links for customer service and contact information should be clearly marked and noticeable on your website.  Never make a customer ‘search’ your site on how to contact you.  Even when you are starting out, be sure you check your emails daily and get back to your customer promptly.
  •  Company Information – It is important that your customers can locate easily your privacy policy, the company information which includes your address, phone, fax and email and your return policies.  Adding an ‘About Us’ page lets your customer learn more about you and your business.  You should also consider offering a customer satisfaction guarantee.
  •  Customer FAQ – Take your site to a more professional level by adding a FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions.  Your customers will enjoy getting answers to their questions quickly and right at their fingertips when they are on your site.
  •  Testimonials – This is a great way to turn a visitor into a customer.  When you can see and read others enjoying the products on your site, this will encourage visitors to make a purchase with more confidence.  When you are starting out, have your friends or other colleagues give you testimonials.  You may have relatives living in another states, send them a free sample of your products in exchange for their testimonial.

There are so many other website features that will enhance your customers shopping experience or your first time visitor to want to return to your site.

How many of these features are included in your website?  Share features you are finding to be effective in increasing traffic and sales.

Top 4 Areas to Keyword your way to Success

Business Computer 150x150 Top 4 Areas to Keyword your way to Success

Keyword Research is Key!

You may have heard it over and over again how important keywords are to your online business success.  Keywords can be one word or a grouping of words that best describes your product, service or market niche.

Keyword tools provide a great way to build your keyword list with ease.  Researching your keywords takes time.  However, the more time you put into obtaining your keywords, you will be rewarded in the end.  Once you have your list of keywords, it is time to put them into action.  The following are the top 4 areas you should consider utilizing your keywords:

URL’s – Domain Names

When deciding on your domain or site name for your blog or website, consider referring to your keyword list.  Use your top keywords first and only working down to your other keywords when those words are not available.

Adding other keywords to create a longer domain name use to be considered not a good thing to do.  But as the internet continues to grow, and as other sites gobble up market niche keywords, longer domain or site URL’s are becoming more acceptable.  After all, it really isn’t just the URL that will get you ranked higher with the search engines.  There is a lot more SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that is required these days to get your new site to top rankings.

Article Titles

Growing your online business with article marketing is important to increase traffic to your blog or site.  Use your keywords to create article titles.  This is a great way to give you ideas of what to write about.

Search for titles using your keywords for popularity, trends and ranking.  Visit top article sites like ezinearticles.com to further research titles that are popular with readers and that are within your keyword range.

Use two to three of your key words in your article titles.  Then sprinkle those same keywords within the article so that it is related to what you are discussing.  Never copy others titles or formats.  There are plenty of ways to say the same thing and will keep you out of any copy write issues.

Anchor Text

Writing articles or posts is a great way to share free information, knowledge and experience with potential visitors.  Visitors enjoy being guided along with other information you can share with them.  By this, I mean, refer them to your site or to another article or post that compliments your information that you are giving to your visitors.  You can do this through ‘anchor text’.

Anchor text is a word or group of words that are linked to another site leading your visitors to more information.  The anchor text should always be your keywords as search engines will take notice and generally help you to get a higher ranking.  Why?  Because you are showing that you are truly concerned about giving good quality content to your readers and NOT selling to them.  Bringing value to your visitors is seen by the search engines in a very positive way.

Blog Posts

Blog posts are similar to articles in that they provide information to your visitors.  Generally blog posts are shorter and allow your visitors to leave comments or suggestions.

Setting up your blog should always have your keywords in mind.  A successful blog requires good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques.  Utilizing your keywords is a great way to set up the categories or pages of your blog.   For instance, if your product is Dog Grooming, you may have categories of Show Dog Grooming, Grooming the Family Dog, etc.    They should represent your keywords and of course make sense too!

Blog posts relating to each of these categories, good content to your reader and using your keywords within the post is an ideal way to get the attention of the search engines.  Posting on a regular basis and encouraging your visitors to make comments is also key.

Your keywords are not only important to blogs and sites, they also describe who & what you are to your visitors.  Growing and branding you, your service or products can be achieved in many ways.  But keywords will play a very important role in getting you noticed with search engines and your visitors!
