This is a great time to be an online entrepreneur with the benefit of exploding your business in a fairly quick time because of all the social media sites, right?

Maybe it is just too fast!  I have been reading, listening and chatting with others about all the social media sites we are using for our business.  The benefits are wonderful to be able to meet so many people within your industry.  Connections, relationships and building clients and customers are a huge part of what social media marketing provides.

BUT …. are we getting too many sites?  Seems every time you turn around, someone is sending an invite yet to another social site.

I was just reading today an amazing article written by my very good online ebiz associate, Peter Masters, of The MarketingM8 Blog, Social media time management and Google +. Social media satire 19

In the article, Peter starts out saying ”The amount of new social media developments in the news is mind boggling and have you noticed that no one mentions social media being a fad any more?”  In fact, he jokes about ‘fad’ being the F word no one is talking about anymore.  I believe it is because we are all way too busy trying to keep up with the ‘social media madness’!

Lately, when talking with local small online business owners, up-and-coming entrepreneurs and chatting with business professionals in online groups — there is a startling common realization …. most people, while they have a huge dream and passion, they do not have any sort of current ‘income stream’.

An income stream from a current job is essential to those wanting to start a business and make  money online.  Why?  Because no matter how long you look or search, you will not find anyone to get your business going, put a website or blog together for you and then manage and maintain it for little or no money.

There is a general belief of many ‘newbies’ that because they see or hear others making hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars online, that they too can do the same thing for ‘a special price, this week only, all for only $4997′, and further they believe, once they pay that out, bam, they will be instant online success.

Even if that were true, where is the income stream?  How long would that program that you just paid for last.  What did the program and the program owners promise they would do for that money.  Do you believe they will treat your business as if it were their own.

I don’t think so …. and I will be bold to say and give you the bad news, of course they won’t.

No one can provide anyone an income stream.  It is YOUR responsibility.  You are the director of your goals and aspirations.  Only you can develop, plan and implement an online business that you will have to maintain, grow and prosper from.

And if that plan means you have to keep your day job until you can kick start your dream of becoming a successful online entrepreneur, then that is what you do.  No one should ever think that they can quit their job today and become a successful online business owner within a couple of weeks.

So before you stop everything and jump online thinking the pasture is greener over here, sit down and really think about all aspects of owning a business, being responsible to implement that business and discuss it with your family.  Make sure it is in the best interest of those that matter.  After all, if they are on board, it will make it a lot easier for you to focus, and go for it!

I call it social media madness! So many social media sites and platforms that can overwhelm even the most experienced online marketing entrepreneur. However, these social sites — like — Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube and have you checked out Empire Avenue yet?!…. have proven to take businesses to the next level.

But there is a social media myth out there that I wanted to reveal. I can’t tell you how many times I hear …. “Linkedin is not for me.”

That is just plain wrong! In fact, if you are not using Linkedin in marketing your business, products or services – then you are leaving money on the table.

Linkedin has been for job seekers and job recruiters.  Large and small companies and corporations  use Linkedin when finding and recruiting executives.  While that is still true today, it is also true that Linkedin provides small online business and entrepreneurs with a huge platform for leveraging knowledge, ideas and opportunities.  Linkedin, in my opinion, is the elite social professional site to build your business with high credibility.  Build connections, alliances and more important, gain acceptance as an expert in your business.  This alone will attract more visitors to you, gain your trust and turn them into customers or clients.

The key to using Linkedin successfully, will be determined on the proper set up of your Linkedin profile.  This includes the appropriate  keywords, optimization and completeness of your information.

Most have tremendous ideas, knowledge, skills, background and tons of enthusiasm.  But then …. there also seems to be another common thread …..

Why are you working so hard and not seeing any success?

My theory and what I hear is that there is too much ‘it can’t be done’ or ‘it is impossible’ syndrome out there. Whether it is your family, friends, co-workers or even people you chat with on the internet, when you start letting others know your new career path, a huge wall is put up and it seems to slam you in the face.

Now I am not a physiologist, nor do I want to give you any medical advice!

My experience has been many years of ups and downs and turn arounds as an online business professional. But one thing is for sure, staying positive, true to yourself and tuning ‘nay sayers’ out is when things started to turn around.

So how can you overcome and tear down the walls? 

  1. Recognize and overcome sabotage – who or what ever is looming over you with thoughts of  ’it can’t be done’ needs to be cleared from your mind and taken out of your day.
  2. Gravitate towards other successful people – find groups, forums and others that have the same positive mindset as you do.
  3. Find a mentor, coach or other positive role model – these types of people have the experience and knowledge to be your sounding board, cheerleader, advisor and a sincere supporter of you!
  4. Practice staying positive everyday – find a motivational quote or saying to start your day and share that with others.
  5. Never give up – most of all, tell yourself every day that whatever comes your way, you will meet it head on and never give up!  Believe in yourself and the rest will follow.

I wonder how many of you whether you are an ‘up-and-coming marketer’ or an established online entrepreneur has had these thoughts or ‘walls’ get into your way?

If you are really looking for success with an online business, you have to treat it ‘like a business’ – period!

  • Get serious and start out the right way.  Don’t rush into getting a website up or a twitter account, when you don’t even know those social tools would benefit you or your online business.
  • Setting up your goals and making a plan, bridges the gap between where you are now to where you want to be.  This will provide for a stronger foundation and a successful, profitable business!
  • Your plan and goals are your ‘road map’ and meant to give you step by step on how you want to create your business.  If you short cut yourself, then you could be in for frustration and disappointment.  I see way too many up-and-coming internet marketers literally … come and go!

So get serious, sit down and write up a plan.  It doesn’t have to be perfect because you will change your plan and goals from time to time as your business develops.

Wanting success doesn’t mean you will instantly get it. You’ve got to ask yourself, “What are you going to do to get the things you want?”

STEP TWO:  Find Hot Keywords –  Keywords are important to every aspect of your online business.  Researching your keywords is a must.  Take the time and properly analyze information that will help you select those keywords for your success.  Google has a great free keyword tool (Google Adwords Keyword Tool) and there are other keyword tools you can search for online such as WordTracker.  You are looking for keywords that have a high search rating but low competition.  If your market niche is camping, you will find a high search rating however the competition will be very high.  Being more keyword specific would help to reduce the high competition. 

STEP THREE:  Build Simple Website –  Today’s online business must have a blog as the hub of your business.  Blogs are exploding their popularity due to the fact search engines, such as Google, love blogs.  Why?  These are sites that are interactive and should have valuable content that pertains to your market or product and brings value to your visitors.  Because blogs are a non-static site, building your awareness and attracting visitors to your site can be done in very quick time period depending on the time and effort you put into your business.  Get you blog up and running in minutes, compared to waiting weeks and even months for a online website.  Which would you choose for generating income quickly? 

STEP FOUR:  Secure Top Search Engine Ranking – One thing you will hear over and over again, ranking high on the search engines will generate traffic and traffic equals sales.  So don’t take this step lightly.  Learn the techniques that will get you ranked on the search engines quickly by applying them.  You will also want to do testing on different techniques as one may work better than the other.  Or a technique may work better during a different time of year.  The most important thing to remember, be consistent.  Create proper profiles, maintain your blog by supplying it with current, valuable content and utilize your social media to spread the word about you, your product and business.

STEP FIVE:  Turn Traffic Into Money –  If you have built your online business properly, at this point you should start seeing traffic coming to your site, visitors subscribing and eventually purchasing your products.  This is the time to interact with your subscribers, through your autoresponders – like iContact or AWeber –  letting them know they will continue to receive great valuable information from you.  Gently offer additional affiliate products or other income generating information, such as memberships, ebooks, etc.  Stay away from the hard sales pitch, keep your subscribers engaged and wanting more from you.  Then they will be hungry and buy what you offer them later down the road.

STEP SIX:  Rinse and Repear! –  At this point, you have subscribers and customers that are learning more and more about you.  Time to find another market niche and repeat steps 1 through 5!   And most of all, have fun, stay positive and meet others to build alliances in helping you achieve your ultimate goal of success.  Congratulate yourself for a job well done and know that your time and efforts were all worth it!

Well, like so many of you, I got extremely tired of being pushed around, watching my job responsibilities expand, my pay decrease and my job security disappear. So I did a little reading and looked around the web and decided, why not, if the numerous 20 year olds out there making a decent income online can do it why not me?

So I jumped in, feet first, to learn, acquire and slay that dragon of entrepreneurial know how to make my first 6 figure income pay check. I enrolled in several programs, affiliate marketing, list building, video marketing etc, etc. While all of these provided valuable content, I reached a point after several months when my head was ready to explode… what to do first, where should I invest my time, resources, efforts, money… ???

Ok, everyone agreed I needed a presence, i.e. branding. Best place to do that, yep you got it the third largest country in the world, Facebook! So off I went Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google. Built the profiles and put in my hobbies, jobs, education…all they asked for. Added my email list to all of them. Now what? Ok another class on social media marketing, build that list, add friends, and attract them by posting valuable content. Check, check and double check.

Must have a blog, it’s your home, the place where everyone will get to know who you are and what you are about. Ahhhh, but now that means you have to post valuable content and what do you want to post and where will you get the new fresh ideas about that content? More to add to the “to do” list!

Twitter, don’t forget to tweet and retweet, check your replies, respond to your messages. Ah but don’t overlook how valuable video marketing can be it will improve your SEO and get you on top in Google. Next, make some videos, talk about your product, and add content. Once you create your channel in YouTube make sure you are checking for responses. Post those videos at multiple sites and get a video distribution site. Check out traffic geyser, tweet meme, social oomph, jing, bit.ly, tweet deck, mashable, and on and on and on…

But when the dust clears and you have spent several thousand dollars at a minimum and hours, no days of reading, no wrong again, weeks examining and testing and listening are you any further ahead. Well, I would say yes, it’s all part of the learning curve in acquiring the skills, expertise, and knowledge needed to develop a presence/brand online.

However I would add one little bit of advice as you approach that dragon, don’t go alone. Find a coach, mentor, knowledgeable expert to clear the trail on your path, someone who has a proven track record and can guide and support you along your voyage. In fact, create a tribe of supportive experts that have the capabilities to forge ahead. Besides who wants to eat dragon alone?

Do You Know Your Capacity Ranking?

What is your capacity ranking 300x200 Do You Know Your Capacity Ranking?You might be thinking this is an odd question?  But if you are fairly new to online marketing, starting a business or looking to make money online, then knowing your current capacity for success is key.

 

Take a minute and write a list of all the areas you feel you are best/strongest at and another list of what you need to get better at.  Be honest with yourself on what capacities you really are good at for your business.  And don’t be too hard on yourself to think you need to get better at everything.

 

These lists will help you to understand what may or may not be holding you back from success.  For example; If you have good knowledge of social networking but need to improve on article marketing, then devote some extra time on writing more articles or read others articles to become more comfortable and confident in this area.  Setting goals and deadlines will make you accountable towards learning, growing and a great way to keep you working on your business.

There are all kinds of ways to increase your capacity ranking through online webinars, discussion groups, mentors, coaching and other business entrepreneurs.  Once you know what you need to get better at, should help to determine which direction to take.

For those areas that you are best or strongest at, how about sourcing those tasks out to virtual assistants or part-time help, giving you more time to learn about the areas you need to get better at.

 

Your strongest capacity of all?  It is your personality.  This should always be on your best/strongest list because your passion, desire and who you are, will always be the reason why you are an entrepreneur in the first place!

Discover the Reason Why You May FailIs this You?  Every day you get onto your computer hoping something will appear to make you jump up and down.  Maybe it is that first order, first client, or the first announcement that money actually was deposited into your PayPal account!

Then you ask yourself why?  You have the website, the blog, the keywords and pretty much everything that the guru’s tell you must have.

 

The #1 reason why most online business owners and entrepreneurs will fail —— IMPATIENCE.  

Every new entrepreneur goes through the ‘impatient’ period.  This is when you can’t eat, you can’t sleep, you get up early and go to bed late all in the effort of creating your online business for success…..  AND YOU WANT IT NOW! 

If I could interview all the guru’s that are currently making millions or even hundreds of thousands of dollars a year they would all tell you the same similar stories.  They started poor, didn’t have a clue what internet marketing was about or they lost their job and they forced themselves to make something happen.  Most will also agree that at one point they were ‘impatient for success’.  BUT they knew how to manage and overcome their impatience.

While this is true in so many cases I wanted you to know that you are not alone.  Everyone has these same feelings one time or another.  Those that deny or tell you differently just don’t want you to know that they are struggling to get to the top.  But guess what?….. there is a way to overcome impatience and find success.

Staying focused on what you set out to do is only going to keep you moving forward.  Now I am not suggesting that you become a hermit or be strapped to your computer.  There has to be a balance even if you think times are at there worst, you must overcome impatience.  Have time for yourself to relax, be with family and friends and take a breather every now and then.  Success does not happen over night and it certainly will not happen if you stay stressed out, frustrated and actually harm personal relationships.

You may say, ‘but I’m not doing that on purpose’, those around you feel it different.  They see you always in a fret, worried, angry and frustrated.  Get out of that mind set as success comes to those that can think clearly and keep themselves positive and balanced.  I have learned that lesson, and maybe it is because I am much older, but still you have to know that first of all you are normal to want to have the success right away.  It is normal to get excited about new things you learn that will help you build your business success. It is normal that you worry and fret about your success AS LONG AS YOU KEEP IT BALANCED!

So forget about all the gurus around you constantly telling you they are making millions of dollars – I say, so what, good for them, now how can I tap into their market niche or better yet, get an interview with them.  Am I giving you some good ideas?

WAIT - First, let’s get back to bringing in the balance.  If you ever feel stressed, tired, frustrated, lack of patience or angry that is a signal to do something that will bring you back into a more positive and productive mind set.  Would you agree?

Good — then get back to work AFTER you take a day off.  Yup, take a whole day off or maybe even better, take two days off!  Don’t look at your computer and don’t talk business around family and friends.  You will not believe how energized, clear minded and rested you will be when you return.  Because I promise you, we all will be here when you get back!
