The question of this post might surprise you. After all, everyone wants more Twitter followers – it shows that you’re a powerful Twitter user, with plenty of people who are eager to see updates from you.
-
But that doesn’t necessarily answer the question – and if you want to be a successful online marketer, you need to answer that question.
-
So as a successful online marketer, why do you want more Twitter followers? It’s about so much more than seeing those follower ‘numbers’ grow in leaps and bounds – it’s about knowing what to do with those followers once you have them.
-
With that in mind, it’s time to come up with a list of reasons why you started using Twitter in the first place. As an example, here’s what my list looks like:
-
- I want to increase awareness of my brand.
- I want to promote my services to pre-qualified traffic.
- I want to drive traffic to my blog.
- I want to reach out to peers in my community to share knowledge.
- I want to be seen as a leading expert in my industry.
-
This list could go on, but the point here is this: once I know precisely what I want to do with Twitter, I’ll have a better idea of what to do with my followers. That in turn gives me a better answer to the question, “Why do I want more Twitter followers?”
-
Once you define what your Twitter goals are, you’ll have a better idea of what you should tweet – and your Twitter account will start to become more accurately aligned with the overall goals of your online marketing business.
-
I would like to hear from you … why do you want more Twitter followers? Please add to my list and leave your comments below.

The real trick is focusing on quality vs quantity. I try really hard to make sure my follower base is made up of people in my niche (photography) or at least one of my hobbies like music or sports. Otherwise, it is hard to get much interaction.

I do agree Larry that quality is a great way to build more interaction, but I’m finding that reaching out to other related industries will pull in those that may be just starting out or have family and friends they would refer.
Twitter is a little tricky when it comes to building followers within a certain niche. I found that by going into other industries or niches I’m getting much more interaction, engagement and increase in attracting new clients and sales.

I opened my twitter account back in Nov 9, 2009. 3 years have passed, I still have 9 followers because I have renewed my interest to it just several days ago.
I’ve created two blog sites 2 months ago and haven’t fully utilized my twitter account not until I have read other bloggers’ thoughts about twitter with regards to marketing. Like how it helped their traffic and all. Reason that I renewed my interest to it.
Aside from the purpose of wanting to increase blog traffic through twitter, I also want to have more twitter followers to gain more friends and to gather more information now in a wider approach.
If I’m reading about Tebow but one of my followers is reading about Kony and twitted about it, then with that, I’m having an additional information which supposedly not in my frequency.
Those are my thoughts. Thanks and cheers!

I want more followers for the right reasons. I see so many tactics people use to get followers and I wonder if their tactic helps their site or just makes them look good on paper. Having the right targeted people following you gives me feedback that they read, share and appreciate my work and the work of others. I tweet allot and sharing other posts I find online is priceless when followers retweet and continue sharing the love over the internet. To me that’s simply priceless.

Hi Lynn, Followers on Twitter or any other networks are required because we want them to read our blog post and know about it, initially this is why we started our blog so that others can read it and get use of it, to drive people to read your article you need them to follow you on social media to get your updates other wise they couldn’t;t know about it; and when they look for it through chance there is a big chance that they will find others articles before they find yours if your blog isn’t SEO friendly. Thanks for sharing this article.

Lynn Brown recently posted..Are You Ignoring This Crucial Aspect to Your Online Business
I want more Twitter followers for one reason: To expand my network. I have found that as my network grows, my bottom line grows. My network doesn’t just include my target market. It includes people that already know, like, and trust me and RECOMMEND me to their networks. That’s been the biggest boost to my business. Other people’s referrals. I wouldn’t have the success I have today without a large, responsive network. That’s my take on Twitter! LOL
Martha Giffen recently posted..Is Social Media Draining Your Bank Account?
Thank you so much Martha for taking time to visit and leave your wonderful words of wisdom about Twitter.
More people need to hear your message about …. As your network grows, so does your bottom line! That is certainly what we are all wanting to achieve.
I am glad you mentioned Martha that you don’t necessarily have to have your ‘target market’ as your only followers. It makes sense, because those that want to follow you and engage with you, those are followers that could also, and probably will, refer others to you.
Your take on Twitter is awesome and again, thank you for words of wisdom!
I joined Twitter almost 4 years ago. I have gradually increased my number of followers. I am not in a hurry to get more followers because I am more interested in the quality of my followers than the quantitiy.
I use JustUnfollow.Com to unfollow people who do not follow me back. I think Twitter should be a two-way street and I seldom follow people who do not follow back.
I think Twitter is a wonderful way to promote my blog and meet people with similar interests. Twitter and Facebook are my favoriate social media platforms.
If you are in a hurry and don’t care about what kind of traffic you get, then there are ways you can do this. But I agree with you Janette, if you are wanting quality leads and connections, it takes time and due diligence to do that. It should result in more contacts that turn into your paying customers and that is what social media helps us to do.
Glad you stopped by and shared your wonderful advice and your own personal experience. Thank you for sharing the link which is helpful to ‘unfollow’ those that are not following you back or that don’t really seem to fit your target market.
yes that’s true
its all about engaging followers correctly after you get them

that’s right
its all about engaging users correctly once you get them
Hi Lynn,
Some food for thought here and it makes a lot of sense. We hear and read that Twitter is a great marketing tool but just like you said, we have to know what to do with our followers that is aligned with our goals so we can be successful in our business.
My primary goal would be to drive traffic to my blog. Once I have them there, I can work on engaging and keeping them and deepening the relationship by providing and sharing valuable content.
Thanks for your insight!
Theresa Torres recently posted..Where Does All My Money Go?
Getting traffic from Twitter is one of the benefits when increasing your followers. But as you point out Theresa, once they are at your site, the business owner or marketer must then know what and how to engage with their audience and get the results they are seeking.
Thank you for stopping by and offering your thoughts on this.
Sometimes we just do things because others are or headlines are screaming at us to get on board. It is good to stop and ask if this is in alignment with our goals. Understanding why we are choosing to invest time and effort into something helps us create a conscious approach to our business…and can save us a LOT of time. Last year, I had a meltdown one day trying to figure out if I should hire someone to do SEO stuff on my site. After working with my coach, I saw that it wasn’t in alignment with my intentions for my site at that time. Still isn’t. Might be some day. Great post, Lynn!
Tambre Leighn recently posted..When the Going Gets Tough…
Very well said Tambre. Being in ‘alignment with your intentions’ – love that! You bring up another good point that there are so many headlines out there seeming to urge us to get onto all these social sites or we just might be missing something. If it doesn’t make sense for your business, then it probably is not a good use of time.
Appreciate you coming by Tambre and sharing your thoughts and advice.
HM—got lots of followers but I got to admit, I think they pay as little attention to my tweets as I pay to theirs. I got on Twitter because I was told to but reading Twitter even in TweetDeck bothers my eyes and boggles my brain. I think I will stick with LinkedIn and Facebook but aside from being unable to hangout on Google+ I am really seeing more value for me there. II get a message in the three whereas Twitter sends me elsewhere. And that means I don’t go. So twitter followers… I am still unconvinced

I want to get more twitter followers for all the reasons you mentioned here on your blog post. But having said that, having a lot of followers isn’t necessarily going to help you market your biz unless you are getting very clear with your target market and finding those who are looking for you.
That’s a struggle and many times, more is not always better, if it’s the wrong target market. Thanks for sharing these great reasons Lynn.

Thanks Cindy and I agree, it does take time and effort to get those followers but it is well worth it, especially when they are within your target market.
I like how you worded it …. get very clear with your target marketing…. that is a huge key to become successful with Twitter and your business.
Appreciate you sharing your comments Cindy, thanks for stopping by!
Hello Lynn,
I think a lot depends on the quality of followers.
Some 95% our followers have no idea who we are but we can’t say the same about Lady Gaga (and that’s exactly why she may get paid $20k for one tweet.)
But to answer your question: I want more followers so people know that I too exist.
thanks for the share!
Akos
I agree Akos, the quality of followers is very important to the success of our business. Appreciate you stopping by today to share your comments. Look forward to you visiting again soon.
I want more followers because I want more people to market my need to establish myself as a freelance writer. But yes, directly getting my twitter followers to do that is just a little not possible; so yes, more the followers, more likely that the word is spread!
But you can never say much about your followers too! Just today I was reading how there is a twitter account by the name of Angie’s right leg (by the famed right leg showed by Angelina Jolie at the Oscars!) and hold your breath… it has over 39 k followers! So really, it does matter who your followers are!
Hajra recently posted..Will they call you over for a Bloggers Party?
I saw that too Hajra! Twitter is definitely know for ‘social’ fun. and there are a lot of people that use Twitter for personal reasons. But it certainly proves the power of Twitter – as that account was added the night of the Oscars (2 days ago) and it attracted that many followers in that short of time.
Thank you Hajra for sharing your experience on Twitter. The followers we are wanting are probably not those that ‘liked’ Angelina Jolie’s leg, lol. But then, you never know, they may be looking for a good writer!
My goal for more twitter followers is to increase my brand awareness. Also, I’ve developed several good business relationships through Twitter. I prefer Twitter over Facebook, but at times Facebook draws more traffic to my site.

I want more Twitter followers that purchase my services….Which is not truly logical- so I want more Twitter followers so they can help market our offerings- and we will have a larger audience to convince that they are not getting the best they can- and need to choose us!

And as your Twitter following grows Roy, that is exactly what happens. You get more people knowing about you, turning into connections, contacts and then clients. Ask those clients to mention you and your services is the best way to get others to take notice and find out more about you.
I think your ‘logic’ is the way more business owners should look at Twitter. And I am hoping I can get @MarthaGiffen to visit and share her expert advice on this tactic.
Thanks Roy for your insight!!
I believe having more followers gives you the “opportunity” to drive more traffic to your website or blog – it is all on how you TWEET and of course the quality of your blog or website so they come back for more. Twitter is my favorite of all the social media sites – short, sweet and to the point!
