6 Things You Might Be Doing Wrong On Twitter

Twitter Common Errors 300x300 6 Things You Might Be Doing Wrong On TwitterWith more than 500 million users, Twitter continues to be a key factor for online business success.

-

As an active user of Twitter for over two years, I’ve noticed many small business owners, marketers and entrepreneurs not using Twitter to its full advantage.

-

Social media is a tool used to attract, build and gain visibility for you, your business, products and services.  The same holds true for Twitter.  This social media platform offers a goldmine of opportunity.

-
If you want to see positive results for your business, you need to learn how to productively use Twitter.  Twitter and social media are powerful ways to build an online presence, instill confidence in your followers and grow connections that will, ultimately, become paying clients and customers.

-
There are common errors that I’ve seen with Twitter users, which can be easily corrected and will increase your following.

-

#1 – Duplicate Tweeting
Tweeting information more than once is a waste of people’s time & puts your account in jeopardy of being shut down by Twitter for repeating (spamming) your followers. Additionally, Tweet only when you will be most visible.

-

#2 – Use Hash Tags With Caution
Hash tags are a great way to link words for a search. When you have more than two words in a Tweet with hash tags, you’re overdoing it and it is annoying. Use hash tags sparingly and only for key points or words.

-

#3 – Self Promotion Poison
Too much of a good thing can go wrong and so can too much self-promotion. Excessive promotion of your product or service can be repelling to your audience. They want to know what is in it for them, not what is in it for you. Don’t excessively “Tweet” your own horn! In the famous words of Owen D. Young, “When boasting ends, there dignity begins.”  (Click to tweet)

-

#4 – Hello? Is Anyone Here?
Neglecting your followers is the quickest way to lose them. When someone reaches out to you on Twitter by re-tweeting your post, video or some of your information and there is no acknowledgement…it implies you don’t care.  Actively utilizing Twitter for your business is a priority. Schedule special time to get this done.

-

#5 – Complete Your Twitter Profile
You need a complete Twitter profile, with a picture, so your followers know you’re real.  Too many Twitter profiles are incomplete. You need to highlight who you are and what you are all about, according to your industry keywords.  And, don’t forget to smile! First impressions are the most powerful!

-

#6 – Buying Twitter Followers
Save your time and money trying to buy a following. Chances are good that they will not be with you long because you didn’t lure them in with something that they need. Contribute to the community…slowly introduce who you are and what you are all about.  Before you know it, you will have a loyal group of followers that need your product, service, or who are simply interested in what you have to say.

-

Learning the correct way to use Twitter for your online business will build the ‘know, like and trust’ among your followers. Utilizing Twitter professionally and productively will not only grow your business community but also allow you to learn how to use a social site capable of providing tremendous results for your online business success!

  5. Sue Neal says:

    Hi Lynn,

Mayura put me onto this post, and it’s a good one. I don’t think I’m guilty of most of these things, apart from occasionally inadvertently sending duplicate tweets (by mistake!), mainly because I’m not smart enough!

I don’t use hashtags much, apart from FF – I actually find them quite distracting and irritating. At the moment I probably don’t promote myself enough on Twitter, because I haven’t figured out how to schedule tweets yet – at the end of the day, it’s much more powerful when other people share your stuff than when you just promote it yourself, don’t you think?

I always try to thank people who’ve tweeted my content but I’ve noticed not everyone has their twitter feed set up on their sites to alert them to this (Adrienne’s always nagging us about this!)

Thanks for some excellent tips, which I’ll continue to bear in mind as I develop my tweeting skills!

Hi Sue, So glad that Mayura sent you this way, he is a good marketer! Appreciate your feedback and while it is nice to have others promote your information, articles, posts and so forth – that comes when a good relationship is built. Meaning, when you share good valuable information, then others will be apt to share it with their followers. I found that if you just be who you are and forget about selling, you communication is more genuine, people will engage more.

As for hashtags, while they may seem an annoyance, they actually have some very good benefit. It lets the reader know what they can expect when clicking a link, a hashtag will be seen by others searching for that term. So you might want to give hashtags another look, try them out, and you should see more traffic, followers and more engagement with your Twitter account.

Again, thank you Sue for visiting and hope you will be back soon, or please feel free to visit me on my blog at http://empowerwithlynnbrown.com Have a successful and joyful day!

    Hi Lynn,

I think this is probably the best post I’ve seen on what to do and not to do on Twitter. I guess I wasn’t aware that you shouldn’t do repeat tweeting though. I am guilty of that one, but I don’t do it excessively. I might post something twice a day if I thought it was especially helpful and want others to see it. :)

And I wasn’t aware that people purchase followers…that seems so strange! How can people think they will get quality followers that way…its pretty absurd.

Thanks for the great information and tips!

Hey Jess! Glad to hear from you again! It doesn’t sound like you fall into the excessive category for repeat tweeting at all. Many times I’ll repeat a tweet, with several hours between the original tweet and the repeat, in order to ensure especially important info hits target audiences in different time zones.

Yes, you actually can “buy” followers…strange as it seems! Deep Thinking

You are absolutely correct regarding the quality of these followers. Obviously, you’ll get a temporary influx of followers, but for how long & how many of these followers will actually remain loyal? Not many, that’s for sure. But, it is a valid form of “mass marketing” in that whomever “follows” the “purchased” followers are exposed to you/your messages/your blog/your web site & you can gain leads/followers through that domino effect.

Thanks so very much for the kind words & I’m very pleased the article was helpful. Have a super week!
      Sweet Thank You

  8. Raena Lynn says:

    Hi Lynn,

I’ve read a lot of articles about Twitter, but I think this one is the most helpful I’ve ever read. Twitter is not my main social media platform, but I know there are many advantages to use it to gain exposure and establish relationships. Your post inspired me to re-evaluate how I am using Twitter and make some changes. I am guilty of not utilizing it to it’s full potential. I prefer manually tweeting, although I have used Hootsuite in the past. It always stems back to consistency which is an area I am working on for my social media platforms.

All of your suggestions are excellent and they have given me a different way of looking at Twitter. I thought it was enough to RT, but there is much more to it! There is enough commentary on this post that shows it doesn’t take that much time to become actively engaged if I commit more to being consistent and treating Twitter as a useful business tool.

    Thanks Lynn,

I’m glad to hear that you plan to re-evaluate the way you utilize Twitter because it can be such a powerful tool. You mentioned that you’ve used HootSuite in the past…that’s great! You are familiar with it and will be able to easily integrate your new Twitter strategies into HootSuite…perfect! You’re spot-on with your comment about consistency. Followers need to hear from you on a consistent basis or the old saying, “Out of sight, out of mind” comes into play. Please let me know how things go for you after implementing your new strategies. I love to hear updates about results and what kind of strategies you decided to implement. Thanks so much for stopping by today and sharing your thoughts. Hope you have a spectacular weekend!

  9. Hi Lynn,

Hello Rosemary! Thanks for dropping in and sharing your thoughts. I definitely believe quality trumps quantity, whatever the situation. After all, first impressions can make or break a business and if quality/professionalism is lacking, customers/clients/followers will, more than likely, decide to go elsewhere…the exact opposite of what we’re trying to achieve, right? Hope you have a wonderful week/weekend!

  10. Lynn Jones says:

Great points that you have given. I use an automated system, but change it about every 2 weeks. I intersperse nice motivational quotes with biz links. The twitter feed runs so fast that many will not even see your tweets. I interact with those who send direct messages, retweet and try to check in daily and see what is happening. Buying Twitter followers? Never. Why, when so many others use automated systems…it is so easy to find followers. I don’t get it…what’s the point of having thousand of followers who don’t pay attention to your tweets? LOL
I appreciate all you have offered here and the extra articles you posted to educate us!

Thanks, Lynn! Utilizing an automated system does make things a lot easier, especially for getting out those messages that are not direct interactions. As for paying for followers, I definitely can think of much better ways to utilize capital than paying for followers that don’t/won’t stick around & really aren’t genuinely interested in my business or services! I do appreciate you stopping by & taking the time to share your thoughts. Tweet on & have a super week!

Yes, Peter…it appears that money can buy just about anything, other than happiness :-)

It does sound strange, doesn’t it? And, you are correct in that it is not very effective because those followers are not truly interested in you or your business — don’t tend to productively engage — nor do they tend to remain loyal followers. It’s always much better to build your connections in a genuine way, based upon the quality content of your site, your core business values, networking with like-minded professionals & actively engaging in the social media platforms of your choice. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Have a great Thursday!

I think I’ll come back to get some new useful tips on this social media platform, I have resisted to join before, because I also have a facebook fan page and a Google+ account as well, I thought it was too much, but Twitter offers a couple of great opportunities, so I had to give it a try…

  13. These are great tips Lynn and I was soooo glad to see your point about duplicate tweets. Every once in awhile someone will find their way to my list and I’ll see tweet after tweet of the same thing – almost always some sort of pitch. And then there’s the person who apparently doesn’t know how to schedule tweets because a long list of tweets will come through – all different, but all at the same time. Either way both are quickly removed!

    • Lynn Brown says:

Exactly Marquita! Duplicate tweets are very annoying and, as you pointed out, we remove them…which is the opposite of what a successful business wants to accomplish. Additionally, you reiterated the very important strategy of scheduling tweets instead of spewing out a long list all at one time. It is precisely that reason why I choose to utilize Hootsuite…such a great tool! Thanks for stopping by and for sharing your thoughts on this subject! Have a great Monday!

  14. Hi Lynn,
Thanks for the tips. I basically use Twitter for syndicating posts a I go along each day. When I do a post I tweet it once. Throughout the week I visit Twitter only once a day. I don’t use an automated system.

I have “Bottlenose” and it streamlines my twitter peeps and what they are responding to me. I like to keep it social so I thank them for the RT, or If the mention something about me, I will try to get the conversation going.

In another column it gives me my daily updates so i can see what my friends are tweeting and pick a few and reply to them.

I know I must be the only one on the planet that hand picks tweets, but i don’t like it automated. Twitter is not my main social platform, but I spend 15 minutes a day on it to catch up.

I was tempted to buy some tweets once, but chose not to because I rather have it organic.

    Thanks for the info!

I know your followers appreciate the personal responses (re: hand-picking tweets). That goes a long way towards building genuine and lasting connections. Additionally, I completely understand your desire to keep it “organic” & not purchase tweets. I like the way you communicated that choice. Sounds like you’re also doing a fantastic job of actively engaging through keeping conversations going & keeping it light/social. Your personality shines through to your followers & they appreciate the genuineness you convey. I’m so pleased you enjoyed my tips and appreciate your thoughtful comments/tips/advice! Have a super weekend!

  15. Hi Lynn,

I’m new to Twitter and really appreciate your tips. I admit to duplicate tweeting blog links, esp. since my Facebook profile and fan page are linked to my Twitter account. I also am a bit confused on how to properly use Twitter as well as how to schedule tweets. I always thank new followers, RT and reciprocate by visiting their blog, website, etc. and leaving a comment.

  16. Hi Lynn,

I would actually have to agree with you on not repeating tweets. I have seen some of the people I follow do it and I must say it looks pretty bad, not to mention it is a bit annoying. The impression that repeat tweets give is that you have nothing new to say or that you are spamming a lot.

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thanks Beverly and you may see in some of my other posts where I talk about my 30/30 rule. 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening to check your social sites. Checking your social sites for direct messages, tweets, retweets, etc. is really important. It lets your audience know that you are active in your business.

However, a lot of the direct messages are just ‘automated’ thank you’s with links to product promo’s and that sort of thing. I like to use HootSuite which lets me see at a glance current tweets, DM’s and those that are mentioning me.

You can get an email each time someone followers you, direct messages you, retweets, etc. That is in your settings of your Twitter account. I have turned that off because you will get to a point where you will get just too many emails every day!

Give HootSuite a try — I think you will find it very helpful not only for Twitter, but you can add Facebook and LinkedIn too :)

Have any questions or get stuck, let me know over on my Facebook fan page or drop me an email. Will be happy to help!

It is important to take care of other people’s comments on our tweets otherwise the while idea of tweeter looses it’s purpose .
Sometimes I wonder though how to make sure everyone gets the right attention when reading my tweets or starts following me.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes !

    • Lynn Brown says:

Happy Friday Patricia! I’m glad you found the information helpful. Indeed, if you do not actively share/engage on Twitter, followers will fade. If you achieve a large number of followers, it is virtually impossible to respond to each and every person. But, you can set a goal to respond to “X” number of tweets per day & respond to the tweets that do, perhaps, address the needs/questions you’ve seen pop up with multiple followers. You can also have a goal to tweet “X” number of times throughout a day, sharing tips/advice/thoughts/questions you might be pondering…asking questions tends to increase the active participation level.

Thanks so much for stopping by today & for sharing your thoughts. Have a super weekend!

Lynn, would duplicate tweeting be considered using different words or phrases to promote a post or link? Of course it would have to be timed out as well. I don’t think you can tweet something once and expect all your followers to see in their streams.
Excessive promotion of course would be a major turn-off. I would agree about buying followers, did it once for business account and you don’t get the quality if you go at it day by day in the proper way with interests, etc.
You really have to build relationships on Twitter too. I think that is the most important piece of the Twitter puzzle.
Lisa recently posted..World Bloggers Award Passing Of The TorchMy Profile

    • Lynn Brown says:

You are right Lisa, tweeting something once, especially if you are promoting an event or product won’t work and isn’t a good marketing strategy. But as you point out, changing the verbiage of the tweet is key. It is a good opportunity for the business owner, marketer or networker to highlight different titles or keywords that pertain to the same link you are promoting.

Glad that you mention this and I hope I didn’t confuse people on this one strategy. Duplicate tweeting is when someone ‘copy and paste’ the same thing over and over again in their timeline. I think, it may have changed, but Twitter can shut your account down for this.

Appreciate your input and sharing your comments Lisa. Thanks for stopping by and wishing you an awesome day ahead!

The most important thing I can tell you is not to be stressed about blogging. Write about what you lovewrite about things you feel passionately about. If you do this, ideas will flow easily, your excitement will return & the stress will fade away like a bad memory. Always remember, your readers can “feel” your mood through your writing…so it’s very important (and a lot more fun) to write about things you enjoy. Share your passion, share your advice & share your experiences…you’ll get back so much in return! Finally, follow the advice of the famous song lyrics & you’ll be ok — “Don’t worry…be happy!” Thanks for stopping by this week and for sharing such thoughtful & genuine comments. Wishing you the best in all you do!

  22. Mayura says:

    Hi Lynn,

You have depicted really nice tips dear :) Very interesting…

Repeating can be done if followers necessarily see it as a repeat, right dear? :) If they see it over and over in hour by hour, it will be really boring. But if we schedule tweets well, we can change the fact, no? I think sometimes it matters as all followers don’t see our tweets at the first time we tweet and repetition is to maximize reach. But I ll add “Be Careful” ;)

As I see, hashtags really helpful for people who search for tweets :) But for followers who see ‘em on stream, seems like spamming… LOL… That’s how I feel if tweets overloaded with hashtags :) I can agree with #3, #4 and #5 without a doubt and I remember you had a great post about completing Twitter profile :) I was wondering why it isn’t mentioned there.

Personally, I have no faith in buying followers dear :) People are not for buying and yet they are not loyal as I feel. If I see someone buys followers, eventhough he/she doesn’t later on, I’m not gonna think about following. But for businesses, it could be plus point on the aspect of marketing and still it could be a fact for criticism.

    Cheers…

Repeating tweets through scheduling is a good idea for some information you are promoting. Because I agree with you, your followers may be in different time zones so having tweets scheduled for different times and different days is required. However, it would be best to change up the verbiage while using the same link. Again, this keeps your Twitter stream interesting and and less boring :)

  24. While I don’t necessarily agree with #1, majority of these points are spot on. Even #1 is correct if abused! Twitter is actually a platform that CAN handle repeat tweeting if the spacing is right. Because it’s an instant-media platform, items posted two days are actually “out of sight, out of mind”. This is why the platform can handle such things and also can handle a higher volume of posts than other platforms.

I use repeat tweeting, of once a day, in the few days right before a major event. However, I do this only in short term use in that high of frequency because it will have an impact on your followers and not always a great one. Definitely consider the pros and cons.

I also use tweeting of my older blog posts to draw traffic (and google) into my archives. There is lots of items in my archives that my followers enjoy seeing and this is not a wasted tweet. However, you don’t want to tweet the same post over and over every day. Shuffle it up and keep it fresh and blend it with new stuff.

I would add #7 of not actually engaging in conversations and not having a percentage of your stream being conversations. If all of your content in your stream is automated, remote tweeted or even just tweet button shares… people will soon learn you are not home and will simply leave you. Twitter, like other social sites, can not only be used as a blast media.

Kimberly: I’m doing my happy dance because of your fantastic comments/advice/tips! You summed-up #1 exactly…don’t continually tweet the same thing over & over…it’s boring & unprofessional. I’m so glad you mentioned the two day factor and absolutely agree & recommend your advice of tweeting older blog posts. Finally, your addition (#7) is terrific advice! Twitter definitely lends itself to the “personal” touch & followers quickly spot someone who is not actively engaged. Social media platforms, as we well know, are such an essential tool for making personal connections, networking & building rapport with customers/clients/colleagues unheard of ten years ago. I greatly appreciate your mindful comments & the addition of such valuable advice. As always, thanks for stopping by & taking time to share your knowledge/experience. Have a super week!
