There’s no denying that those readers who’ve opted in to be your friend, follower or a part of your LinkedIn network are the lifeblood of your online business.
For example, a recent report from Internetretailer.com - (Social Media Users Are 83% More Likely To Be Loyal Customers) –showed that these readers are 83% more likely to buy from you than an untargeted reader.
—
But that doesn’t mean sending a message or updating your profile will automatically translate into sales. So how can you ensure that readers look at your profile updates and messages?
—
Simple: use these ridiculously easy hints and tips!
- Whatever you do, don’t pester them. Aim for two to three private messages each week and a profile update each day: anymore than that and you’ll be considered annoying; any less and they’ll forget who you are.
— - Make your status updates and messages as informative and compelling as your free reports and articles. For example, reveal a secret about your industry, and encourage them to learn more great secrets and other information to peak their curiosity.
— - Offer your friends or followers special discounts for your new product launches. They’ll really appreciate the red carpet treatment – and you can guarantee that this will equal higher conversion rates!
— - Don’t update your profiles during busy work hours, as your customers will be distracted by work/social obligations. Research has shown that when it comes to updating social networking sites, lunch hours, Monday mornings and Friday afternoons result in more views.
The main point of social networking is to keep a good relationship with your customers. Not only is it far cheaper to hold onto an old customer than acquire a new one, but customers who’ve purchased from you once before will continue to be repeat customers down the line.
—
Repeat customers lead to great testimonials, fantastic word-of-mouth recommendations and can even lead to new online marketing opportunities.

These are all true. No matter what social media accounts you have do not update your status during busy hours not only customers will find it annoying even your friends as well. Great tip thanks for reminders Lynn.
Glad you also agree Tina. You said it right, timing is everything, so be respectful of that and you will have a more positive result. Appreciate you sharing your comments and wonderful advice!
So True..
I like your tip #4, Lynn! I will try to remember that, because I usually post when I get a chance, I don’t really pay attention to the time of the day
Also, another thing that I’ve noticed is that some posts get more attention in the day of the week that most people get their weekly updates (at this is the default Linkedin setting).
To your #2, when post an update, I try to introduce it with an interesting short paragraph, even a question that will hopefully get more attention that a simple link. I tend to check out the updates that have a bit of intro too, because they are more inviting.
Yes Delia the time of day also is a factor, so thank you for making that point. I like to check my analytics and stats which helps me to determine when my clients or visitors are clicking. You also bring up another great point about starting off with a question or other interesting information. If you build curiosity, that is generally a great attention grabber for sure.
Thank you so much for stopping by today and sharing your advice which will certainly be helpful to everyone. Sure hope to see you again soon.
Hey Lynn,
Thanks for the LinkedIn tips. Somewhat like you, I focused on LinkedIn just this year. I say “somewhat” because other than building out my profile a bit more, I haven’t done a lot with it. I’m working through a guide put together by Stella Anokam (do you know her?) and now I’ll incorporate your tips. Maybe by 1st quarter 2012 I will finally be able to say I’m “using” LinkedIn!
Sounds like you have a good plan Vernessa! and yes, I know of Stella Anokam, we follow each other on Twitter. I think the key to Linkedin is your profile and if you can get it properly set up and optimized, then you can really start attracting folks. I want to let you and anyone else know that I recently completed a 10 video +1 bonus video training course that I show you inch by inch, and step by step on properly setting up and optimizing your LI profile. Not trying to ‘sell’ you anything, but I am proud of the response I have been getting and how folks are taking away a lot of valuable and useful information. If you get a minute, visit this page http://learnit2earnitwithlynn.com/10links
And of course Vernessa if you have any questions or want some Linkedin advice, please let me know. I enjoy helping others reach their ‘ah ha’ moments when it comes to Linkedin and social media. Thanks for stopping in and sharing your thoughts!
I don’t use Linked In the same way I do FB so this is a good reminder, Lynn.
I have to say Tambre my consistent activity on Linkedin didn’t really start until the beginning of 2011. Once I saw the immediate results of building connections and attracting contacts and clients, it opened up my curiosity to learn everything I could about this platform. I look forward to sharing more tips and techniques and should you ever have a question or need some ideas on implementing Linkedin, please let me know.
I appreciate you stopping by and sharing your comments.
Loved these tips, Lynn! My favorite is the one on taking advantage of status updates. So far, I feel like my Facebook strategy is not very proactive at all — I mostly respond to others. But it seems like the people who are truly making connections out there are those who are providing information or tidbits of reflection all the time! =)
I’m so curious — where did you get those statistics on the best time to update social networking sites? I think I read a piece by Dan Zarrella once and he said that weekends were really good days too!
Good to hear you enjoyed these tips Samantha. The stats come from different articles that I read and you are right, there are so many opinons out there about the ‘best time’ to socialize. What I tell my clients is, whatever is working for you, keep doing it! In other words, if you are finding more interaction and engagement over the weekends, then your audience is telling you that is the best time. Keep with it
Facebook has become a social site that I am learning more and more about ‘how’ to actually turn your fan page into results. You see, I think people focus way too much on building ‘fan numbers’ … rather than building quality fans BUT when they come to your Facebook fan page, what are they suppose to do?
I am working on some marketing tips that I will be sharing in the next few weeks. Been learning from a new marketer, Brian Moran, that I met (of all places) on Linkedin!
Thank you Samantha for stopping by today and sharing your thoughts and ideas.
Definitely, Lynn! Since we’re relatively small businesses, I think the “best times” have everything to do with our very specific markets. And I so agree that it’s about quality engagement and not just accumulating fans at random. =P
Can’t wait for your next piece on marketing tips! =) It’s always exciting to share ideas with new friends. =)
Power tips here Lynn. Keeping your updates as informative as possible generates strong interest. Always offer your best, whatever you are up to. We only have the Now, so there’s no sense saving your best stuff for a future which never arrives. There is only the moment.
Thanks for sharing!

So true Ryan! Thanks so much for stopping in and sharing your insight. We really are in the moment so we might as well take advantage of it right now. Good input that is an awesome reminder.
Love simple ‘n easy tips…but I do get confused when people recommend tweeting and posting at a particular time, especially for businesses that are not geographically bound. What is lunch for the east coast is commute and/or get the kids to school west coast time. Most of my readers are in North American but some are international. Following guidelines for posting at particular times doesn’t seem possible. Any thoughts on this?
Yes I agree with that Tambre. Recently, there have been some awesome online tools that business owners can implement and use for their global clients.
Bufferapp.com is one such product. It allows you to ‘schedule tweets’ for different times of the day.
MarketMeSuite.com is another product that is similar to a HootSuite but allows you to ‘brand your business’ and also has a very good scheduler for your tweets
I know there are other products out there that help with this. I also have suggested my 30/30 rule which is 30 minutes on the social platforms (twitter, facebook & linkedin) in the a.m. and 30 minutes in the p.m. This will help for those different time zones and folks will see you as consistantly being active.
Thanks Tambre for mentioning the timing issue as it is something to consider with these social sites.
LinkedIn is awesome and the relationships and friendships there are really powerful. More and more people are seeing the commercial benefit of LinkedIn for business and jobs
I agree Roberta, Linkedin truly is a powerful platform for business. Glad you stopped by today and offered your comments.
