If you want to master the art of Facebook marketing, then you’ll obviously need to understand the best techniques out there. But sometimes mastering Facebook marketing has as much to do with learning what’s considered inappropriate – so make sure you follow these hints so you don’t make a critical mistake:
—
Have a Life. If you devote all of your time to Facebook marketing, there’s no possible way that you can be interesting to your readers – after all, you’re not out and about having a life! Make sure Facebook doesn’t consume your day-to-day activities, even if your fans demand lots of updates from you; the aggravation just isn’t worth it. Besides, you should connect with your clients in the real world as well as on Facebook.
Avoid Constant Self-Promotion. Sure, you may think that Facebook marketing is all about self-promotion, but don’t ever forget that Facebook is a social media tool – therefore, use it for social purposes. You can insert a few links to your website, but provide your readers with free and relevant information as well.
Use Your Status Updates Wisely. It may be tempting to post the minutia of your online business to everyone in your life, but use your status updates to provide readers with genuinely interesting and funny updates. Note: this does not include what you had for breakfast (yes, I’ve seen it before!).
Avoid making these critical Facebook marketing mistakes, and you’ll be well on your way towards dominating the Web 2.0 world.
It’s your turn! Please add to these top 3 mistakes; what have you experienced that works or doesn’t work when it comes to Facebook marketing?
Wishing you and your business much Success!

Great article Lynn, Thanks!
For me, I don’t spend nearly enough time visiting Facebook. I appreciate the advice of you and your readers. It makes sense as Daphne stated, spend some time commenting on someones status. It is a great way for others to see who you are and often they will request a friendship. I have started to spend time in a few groups, adding any value to the discussion has brought several people to my blog.
It’s one more thing to add to the list of my daily routine but I can really see the payoff.
Thanks again for the great post!
Richard
Appreciate you sharing your insight Richard. It really is a juggling act at times when it comes to social media. But I too have found great benefits and results in getting involved with groups and primarily on Linkedin. Linkedin is a platform of professionals with the mindset of business.
While Facebook offers groups, there tends to be less focus on actual business discussions and more on sharing their self promoting posts. Not to say Facebook doesn’t bring a nice stream of visitors my way, it’s that I am finding Linkedin to provide many more business opportunities for me in a very short period of time.
I also have noted over the past 9 months how each individual ebiz must develop a specifc plan on the social sites they choose to spend time on. What works for one doe not necessarly mean it will work for another. Would you agree?
What? People don’t want to know what I had for breakfast? I am shocked! Seriously, great advice, Lynn.
Another mistake would be not engaging other people. Go ahead, comment on some one’s status. It helps your friends to get to know you better.
It is a shock, right Daphne, lol !! Thanks for pointing out how important it is to comment on each others status, it is another way for others to learn more about you. Great point!
Excellent post, Lynn! The first and the last are points that have taken me all of this year to learn — I now limit my time on Facebook and try to only post status updates with articles I write twice a week. I get much more of a response that way when I’m not being spammy! =) Well thought out! =)
Thank you Samantha! I’m glad to hear that you have found the right content and frequency in sharing with your fans on Facebook. It takes time to test things out and see how our audience and visitors react. So congrats to you for knowing to try different things as it is almost always helpful in bringing success to your business.
Appreciate you stopping by today and sharing your thoughts.
Good reminders, Lynn. I think we should remember that Facebook is a wonderful opportunity to encourage and share with others. The focus should be on giving instead of self-promotion. Sometimes just giving a “thumbs up” lets others know that we read their post and wish them the best.
How true that is Janette and I love your insight about ‘giving’. If you give of yourself…. well, it just makes for a wonderful community. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts and stopping in today.
I love this Facebook series you are doing… so awesome. Asking a lot of questions and for opinions helps loads in connecting with your fans… everyone loves to have an opinion!
Thank you Hajra and I am so glad that you stopped by, enjoyed the read and shared your thoughts. Always good to hear from you!
Thank you for this great reminder Lynn,
Great post here, you are so right. When it’s all about ‘ME’ it gets downright boring and irritating. As well, thanks so much for the reminder to ‘get a life’ to go along with the marketing. Sage advice, indeed. FB can become a real addiction, to say the least!I think it’s like anything else in life, when you show interest in other people, promote and acknowledge their efforts, spread a little encouragement and show people you care – that’s what it’s all about.
Many thanks,
Barbara
Well said Barbara! and I think more and more online consumers and customers are not impressed with the ME people! I’m glad you agreed with the ‘Get a Life” as I was hoping people wouldn’t take that the wrong way.
If we dwell on any one thing rather than keeping our focus, then our business and personal lives will suffer.
So glad that you stopped by and offered your wonderful advice and insight!
