Will Procrastination Destroy Your Online Success?

Procrastination Fear of Success 300x185 Will Procrastination Destroy Your Online Success?
Get On With Your Success – No More Excuses – Stop Procrastination!

Procrastination is putting off what you can do right now.  So why do you procrastinate when you know working your online business will bring success and make your dreams come true?

Top 3 Excuses For Procrastinating:

1) Fear of Success - You dream it, you want it and you can’t wait for the day you reap success through your business.  So what are you afraid of?

Fear of success is more common than you think.  People that fear success generally have great ideas, are intelligent, and hard working.  Some will get to a point where they need to complete a sales page, setting up a shopping cart or even sending out that promotional email.  There can be many reasons for this, and that is why if you have a fear of success, you must try to overcome it.

2) I Don’t Know Enough - Even the most successful online entrepreneurs had to start from somewhere.  No one ‘knows it all’ and if they say they do, then run!

Once you have established your market niche, every day learn something about your products or services.  This will increase your knowledge and experience.  Then begin to write about what you learn.  You build your expertise, you are not born with it.

3) Someone Is Already Doing That - I learned a long time ago that even if we all decided to sell or promote Dog Training, that no one person would receive all the sales.  Why?  Because we all would take different paths on how you market your products, your personality and your imagination is what creates all of our unique paths.

No two paths would ever be the same.  In other words, we are all like a star in the universe – no two are alike!

Great article, . especially the take on ‘fear of success’. If one wnts to succeed one neds to accept rejection as part of the journey and make adjustments at every turn or detour as the journey demands

  2. Ben says:

Great article! Thank you for the aspect of the fear of success. I think one just need to release oneself and be in the flow. I have come to understand that for you to succeed you have to accept been rejected. Take each obstacle on the way as part of the journey and adjust as need be.

  3. Lynn, this is a very good post. I often catch myself looking at something I ‘have to do’ and just want to put it off to another time. I have to get my mind re-oriented and make the decision to get on with the job at hand and accomplish it NOW instead of waiting. Feels a lot better afterwards. LOL

    • Lynn Brown says:

I agree with you Bruce. It does feel much better getting things done and
accomplished. I like being able to ‘check things off’ my to do list!
Appreciate you stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

  5. Danny says:

A good article. Your points are vey helpful and enlightening.

  6. Hi Lynn – all good points, if you don’t mind I would like to expand on the one about Fear of Success. This is more prevalent than most people think; fear of success is caused by the mental limitations we each put on ourselves. We (or rather some) place these subconscious mental limitations there because we believe that we can only accomplish so much. For instance if you don’t think you can achieve a six figure income – quite simply you won’t.
Great post and to the point……….

    • Lynn Brown says:

I agree with you totally Corey. In fact, part of my training program that I
am in works on, includes a personal evaluation so anyone that thinks they
want to be the million dollar man, must come to grips on what their mindset
is today and how that will affect them and their success later down the
      road.

Law of Attraction teaches a lot about what you expanded on. I really do
appreciate you stopping and getting into the discussion. You have brought a
tremendous insight into a very important topic. And I never say you can’t
be that millionaire, I always ask do you want to become that millionaire!
It IS about ‘mental limitations’. Thanks again Corey and hope you stop by
      again soon.

      • Thanks for replying to my comment Lynn and welcoming me to stop by again.
Well here I am again and like you I would never infer that someone couldn’t be a millionaire, or for that matter, anything they were striving for. Continuing on and referring to your statement about “asking someone if they want to become that millionaire” would (at least in my mind) go to a persons’ dreams and goals and “how their own particular success story begins”.

We all start somewhere in our road to success, usually it starts with a thought, to an idea and on to belief………”ah” there comes the potential for “mental limitations”.

        Take these two names:
Michael Dell and Earl Tupper – what about their own mental limitations:

Just as Michael Dell came up with Dell Computers, and Earl Tupper came up with Tupperware, anyone can have a million dollar thought, that can be turned into a million dollar idea that could even become another household name, if we don’t limit ourselves.
Or maybe you will be one of the thousands of millionaires that are basically unknown, or do you choose to remain unknown because of your own mental limitations and your own fear of success.

We all have our choices on how our success story begins or never gets a chance to begin?

        • Lynn Brown says:

Well who knew, Corey, how well you can write! Your expressions and thoughts
are gripping. “It starts with a thought to an idea to a belief” is
priceless! How true that statement is. Hope you don’t mind, but I will be
sharing that with others. So now I really want you to be sure to come back
and visit again as I hope others, like me, are waiting for more awesome,
positive and supportive thoughts from you!
Care to do a guest post for me?

          • Thanks for the compliment Lynn and kudos, I really appreciate them. You are totally welcome to share the statement above as well as anything else you feel benefits your articles for your readership and followers.

As far as guest posting – honored – I would be honored.

Procrastination is a huge problem for so many people. Thanks for addressing it.

My main tools to defeat the procrastination beast are a must-do-today action list and a timer. I’ve learned I need to break projects up in to chunks that can be completed in a small amount of time (10 or 15 minutes).

    • Lynn Brown says:

Oh that is a good idea Lynn! Lists are my favorite as well but the ‘project
chunks’ is really good. And not only do you get your projects done, but you
are providing good time management for your busines. Thanks for mentioning
this and look forward to having you stop by again soon.

  9. Perfection is a far remote idea. Instill confidence and start without loosing time. Great ideas Lynn!

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thanks Sreekumar, confidence is key to help overcome procrastination. Glad
that liked my ideas and thank you for stopping by to share your thoughts.

  10. Jerry Nihen says:

Great points. It’s so important to realize that it’s important to actually get out there, make a few mistakes, but most of all LEARN and get better. Very well done.

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thanks Jerry for stopping in. Glad to hear that making a few mistakes is okay, like you say, just get out there!

You also bring up a very good point — it is important to learn all you can to better yourself in your business that will bring more value to your clients and customers.

Hope you will stop by again soon.

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thank you Jerry for stopping in and bringing your insight into the
discussion. Mistakes are okay as long as you learn from then and try not to
make the same mistake again! Hope that you will stop by again soon.

  11. Agree, agree. I can identify with the points, I see your post points being experienced or stressed in other business and I like your last comment- positive and upbeat and true. Thank you.

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thanks Veronica I am glad that you took away some positive points. The
discussion here is awesome. So many have provided good advice and other
forms of procrastination that can be overcome by staying focused and
      motivated.

  12. Lisa Simpkins says:

    Perfectionism…
Because we expect ourselves to be perfect.

Procrastination and perfectionism often go hand in hand. Perfectionists tend to procrastinate because they expect so much of themselves, and they are scared about whether or not they can meet those high standards.I for one am a perfectionist.

    • Lynn Brown says:

Oh that is a good one Lisa! There are a lot of people that do hold
themselves back because they think they have to have that perfect webiste or
the perfect logo. I recently had a client that wouldn’t start his eBiz
until he had the right ‘saturation of color’ for his logo.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and bringing up a very good
      point!

  13. You did a good job with this post and the video, Lynn. I think that I procrastinate because I think I have plenty of time. I can always do it tomorrow, but tomorrow never comes.

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thanks Janette, appreciate the compliment. and …You are absolutely
right. You can have too much time which can open doors for excuses or
become unmotivated. So putting deadlines on projects, adding more time to
devote to your social networking and adding new business projects might help
to ‘push’ you along and grow your business.

Really appreciate you stopping by and making that point. Hope you will come
back and visit again real soon. Maybe give me an update on any tips or
advice you might have learned from this discussion. Lots of great
suggestions and ideas for this topic.

  14. Not only ‘stars’, Lynn, but we’re like snowflakes, too. No two are alike. :)

I seem to have a “pattern” when it comes to procrastination. There are certain tasks, chores, and activities I always procrastinate over and have for many years. Luckily, they don’t involve building my business. They’re all related to my personal life — things like housework, laundry, washing & waxing the car, and so forth. Hate to admit it, but I don’t have any problem whatsoever putting these items on the proverbial ‘back burner’.

Thanks for helping people transform “procrastination” into “motivation”. Great video, too!

    • Lynn Brown says:

Thank you Melanie. Boy did you hit the nail on the head. I have a similar
pattern. Once I overcame the ‘fear of success’ I looked at things
differently and said, ‘ok what can I get out of my life so I have more
time for my business’. A big glaring one was …. cleaning the house. So
solved that with having a gal come every two weeks to clean.

It doesn’t seem like much, but to have those extra hours every month is
huge. And it has proven to be very beneficial as well. So I have to agree
with you and so glad you brought up ‘other’ activities outside of our
business that can hold us back as well.

But really now, waxing the car? That is what my teenage son is for. Ha
      Ha!

      • LOL! I was hoping for at least one boy, but I was blessed with four girls instead — and not ONE of them enjoys waxing the car. :)

Great idea, if your budget will allow, to hire a housekeeper. Household chores aren’t hard to do but, boy, do they take a lot of time every week! My mom is 83 and I’ve been begging her, for years, to hire some help. I think she’s finally going to cave in and take my advice. Let’s just say she’s a little stubborn. :)

        • Lynn Brown says:

You’re right Melanie, it isn’t that housework or even laundry or other
chores are hard to do. It is the TIME that it takes and I see it now as
time away from my business. Now don’t get me wrong, I still schedule in
plenty of family time – I’m a huge fan of balancing family and business.
You have to have both for success!

  15. Hajra says:

I procrastinate all the time, just putting it off saying that I am not so good at it and the fear of failure is much more dominating in me. Will have to get over it. Try to keep myself motivated! Thanks for a great lesson :)

    • Lynn Brown says:

Just by you knowing that you procrastinate is the first step. And as Ryan
mentions above, Hajra you will learn something each and every day that will
build your knowledge and confidence. So stick with it. This group is
awesome when it comes to sharing advice, tips and support.

I appreciate you taking the time to experss your thoughts and always know
you can ask me any question you might have so you can overcome any bumps or
ruts that may stop you from moving forward. Like you say Hajra, ‘keep
      yourself motivated”!!

  16. I have noticed of late that some people seem to go all out for two or three months and then they get busy and suddenly the stop. Procrastination and giving up cause more problems for anyone off and on line

    • Lynn Brown says:

I have noticed that recently Roberta. People start of all excited and full
of enthusiasm. But then months later you don’t hear or see them on any of
the social sites. I wonder if it could be information overload along with
procrastinating to learn something every day and apply it?

Appreciate you pointing that out. I think this is an important topic that
      probably should be discussed often.

  17. Hi Lynn,

    Excellent points you make.

#2 is a biggie, one that I had to work through. People aren’t born experts, and nobody starts off a venture being an expert…otherwise, they’d be an expert ;) Sounds silly, but it shoots holes in the limiting belief that you don’t know enough.

Whatever you want to do, start today. You will gain the proper tools along the way.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day!

    RB

    • Lynn Brown says:

I agree with you Ryan. If we were born experts, no need for schools or
training or learning. So point well taken, especiall about ‘whatever you
want to do, start today”…. something we could say to ourselves every day
we get up! Appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts.

  18. Anonymous says:

Lynn- I think you missed the most prevalent reason- that one is too busy to get “that” done. These folks don’t consider their goals and prioritize their actions, so they are always too busy to get done things that will make a REAL difference in their lives.
And, I have procrastinated enough, today- it’s Friday. I only work 1/2 a day today.
    Toodle-oo!

    • Lynn Brown says:

Ahhh the “too busy” excuse. I have used that one many times. And you are
right, Roy. Life in general is busy. Whether it is in our business or
personal life. Prioritizing is definitely a way to overcome the excuses and
procrastination. Thanks so much for providing your insight. Now have a
      wonderful weekend!
