Blogging strategies may seem pretty cut and dry… after all, the most you have to do is update your blog with great content, respond to the comments and embed plenty of juicy backlinks to your main website – right?
—
Actually, there are plenty of blogging strategies out there that could cause your online marketing campaign to go bust. I wanted to uncover some of the worst blogging strategies you may be falling for – so if you recognize yourself in any of these so-called “strategies”, toss them to the curb!
—
- Promoting Your Products or Services. Okay, there’s no denying that as online marketers we should slip in a mention of our products or services at least a couple of times – but if you’re insisting on mentioning your business or products for every single blog post, you’ll lose out on a serious number of consumers. No one wants to willingly subject themselves to constant advertisements – so if your readers see you going down that road, don’t be surprised they’ll stop following your blog.
— - Writing Just to Provide Fresh Content. Blogging strategies always emphasize the fact that you need to keep your blog post constantly updated – but if you’re updating your blog with tired, lame and downright uninspired posts, your clients will run for the hills. If you don’t have anything to say that day, it’s better to conserve yourself for tomorrow than post a dry and tired blog entry.
— - Keeping the Blog Light and Friendly. Yes, the best blogging strategies involve keeping your blog friendly, conversational and fresh – but don’t do it to the point where you’re revealing information about your friends, family members and your personal life in general. Remember, you’re an online entrepreneur, so try not to reveal too many personal stories in an effort to come across as friendly.

Thanks for tip no 1, 2, and 3
1 is very true, I have unfollowed people before for that!
It is that important balance of providing your audience with benefits and features of your products and services, rather than ‘selling’ them the goods. So just as you say you unfollow people for always ‘selling’ on everything they do, you can bet Vincent that others do the same. You can build a much more impressive brand and visibility by sharing information that is helpful to your audience with a mention about something that might help them to do so, which is your product or services.
Thank you so much for stopping by today and sharing your comments. I hope you will visit again soon!
This is a great post, Lynn. I especially agree that it’s important to keep fresh content, so that your readers will keep coming back for more. But like you said, if an individual has nothing to say, it’s probably best to save the posting for another day that they do. Very awesome post though, this was extremely helpful.
Thanks Deeone for sharing your thoughts and comments it is always good to hear from other online marketers and share your advice. Appreciate you stopping by today and look forward to seeing around the net!
I totally agree about the promoting bit, Lynn! Although, sometimes, I come across successful companies that seem to do well even if all they talk about is themselves! Have you ever noticed this? I’ll have to be more observant to see what kinds of companies these are — maybe it has to do with the fact that they changed their marketing strategy or that their product/service sells for itself.
I’m wondering if they are the larger corporations or product branding that are more self-promoting? I can appreciate some self-promoting as long as your intentions are to support the purpose and how that will help your client or customer. Once again it is the balance which I feel is important in all aspects of our business. But you bring up a really good point Samantha and I appreciate your sharing. Maybe there will be others that will offer their thoughts on this…. thanks for stopping by today!
Ah Lynn, you are so right! These will definitely kill the blog in a heartbeat.
They all fall into that category of wanting us to run away quickly. I also agree with Roy, those annoying pop-ups that show up right while I’m trying to read really get on my nerves. I can’t believe people say they work. Do they sign up just to make them go away?Great tips and ones I hope people pay attention to and if they are doing any of what you mentioned, will stop immediately. It’s never too late to salvage your reputation.~Adrienne
It was interesting, today I just read an article about pop-ups. It seems that a lot of online biz owners ‘say’ they see their lists grow when they use these pop-ups. However, if the pop-up blacks out your screen and freezes so your visitor can’t get back to your post (which that has happened to me on many sites) I can see those people getting frustated and never wanting to return.
On the other hand, I have used pop-ups in the past BUT I have found that you can obtain the proper plugin so you have total control, like the number of times it popsup, etc. I haven’t had my pop-up for a while now, I am going to be testing another one here as part of my marketing plan
for 2012. We will see what results I actually reap.
Really appreciate you stopping by today Adrienne and sharing your awesome tips and advice.
I like tip #3. I sometimes write too much and often go back and delete portions of my blog articles.
I think people like a post that can be read quickly and gets right to the meat of the matter.
I think it is OK to share personal stories so that people will understand where you have been and where you are going.
Good points Janette. I too am looking to get the information quickly but also know that if it is something of detail, it may take a longer post to explain. Thanks so much for stopping by today and sharing your wonderful thoughts and good advice!
Oh, and there’s a corollary to 1- insist on pop-ups/blockmes from letting us read your blog in the first place!
Oh yes, forgot about those pop-ups! Thanks Roy for sharing that. That is another ‘worst strategy’ for any blog and it is amazing how I still see some blogs that have them.
So agree with #1 – you see so many folks tweeting just their own stuff – why? Don’t they realize it’s social media? It’s meant to have conversation and engage others not just toot your own horn all day. The same goes for all the other social networks too. It’s best to mix it up.
Not so sure on #3. I have heard people like to see businesses and bloggers as real people, no?
I agree with you Lisa, social media is just that … social. And tooting your own horn all the time can be a big turn off. I appreciate you sharing your advice on that strategy.
I also see your point about my 3rd strategy. I think that too much personal information may be seen as unprofessional. Having a good balance with your unique personality sprinkled with some personal interests will build a good rapport with your audience.
Thanks Lisa for stopping by and really appreciated you sharing your thoughts a good advice. Hope you will visit again soon.
Great advice Lynn, what a great reminder, you’ve really laid out some excellent points here that I’ll be considering in my own posts. Many thanks!
Barbara
